Object Classes

The following is a guide about the application of Object Class Tags and when and how which such tags are applicable to an article. This is one of the most complicated areas of tagging and requires several subrulings. All of the information discussed here has been policy for sometime but only existed through word of mouth and not fully implemented on any page.

In the vast majority of instances, this guide will not apply to the article in question. If the page doesn't do anything out of the ordinary with Object Classes — like, for example, SCP-173 — then there is no need for this guide to be used. However, there are many pages which do something slightly unusual with an Object Class, and these cases must be explained in depth.

Polus with Ten Players and Two Imposters

There are eight Object Class Tags: safe, euclid, keter, thaumiel, apollyon, archon, pending, and esoteric-class. In addition to these eight Object Class Tags, there are two classes that can can fit the role of an object class tag if necessary: neutralized and explained. An SCP page must have one of these nine tags. It can never have more than one of the first eight; it may have one of the first eight and either/both of the latter two.

No Object Class and Esoteric Class

If the article doesn't have an Object Class defined above, then it receives esoteric-class. This applies whether it has a custom made Object Class or is somehow lacking an Object Class. If no tag or combination of tags above could be applied, it receives esoteric-class.

Object Class: Yggdrasil

Gets esoteric-class.

Object Class: None

Gets esoteric-class.

Item #: SCP-0000
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-0000 is to be put in a locker.

Gets esoteric-class.

Neutralized

The neutralized tag can occasionally take the role of an Object Class Tags, if there is no other tag that could be applied to the article in question. If, ignoring the Neutralized class, there is an older, previous class that applies to the article, then apply that tag. This is most common situation in which an article can have more than one tag and the only situation in which dual-classing is allowed. Examples follow:

Object Class: Neutralized

Gets neutralized and no other tags.

Object Class: Keter Neutralized

Gets both keter and neutralized.

Object Class: Yggdrasil Neutralized

Gets both esoteric-class and neutralized.

Explained

The explained tag can also take the role of an object class. It generally functions as Neutralized, as above, in most situations: if there are any prior object classes, the most recent object class is counted alongside explained.

Additionally, explained can also act as a Major Page Tag. Any article which has a slug that follows the /scp-####-ex convention receives the explained tag. explained effectively only acts as an Object Class Tags in the following situation:

Object Class: Explained

or

Object Class: Keter Explained.

In the following, yet-to-be-seen situation, the article would receive explained and esoteric-class.

Item #: SCP-0000-EX
Special Containment Procedures: N/A

Dual Classes

At current, Tag Policy does not support dual class articles. If an article has two object classes, then it receives esoteric-class and neither of the other tags it might normally receive. This applies even if both the object classes are standard object classes that have tags.

Object Class: Thaumiel/Apollyon

This receives esoteric-class.

Note: There currently exists a small number of Series 1 articles that have multiple Object Class Tags. These articles all predate formalized tagging as a system and have been grandfathered into it and allowed to keep their object class tags. They do not set precedent for future articles.

Evolving Objects (i.e. ListPages)

On a ListPage article (or an article which simply has multiple instances of the SCP format by means of collapsibles or the like, or otherwise updates the Object Class as the page evolves), use the last version of the page to determine Object Class. If the object ends in Neutralized, go one revision back and use both Neutralized and the most recent Object Class.

One major note to this is subobjects. These are not counted for Object Class tagging purposes.

Examples:

First Offset:
Item #: SCP-0000

Object Class: Safe

Last Offset:
Item #: SCP-0000

Object Class: Keter

This receives keter.

First Offset:
Item #: SCP-0000

Object Class: Safe

Last Offset:
Item #: SCP-0000-1

Object Class: Keter

This receives safe.
